Perth’s eastern suburbs run from the industrial and freight areas around Perth Airport, Kewdale, Hazelmere and Malaga north-east along the Swan River flats to Midland, Guildford and the Swan Valley. Midland is the region’s strategic centre, serving as the retail, health and transport hub for the eastern corridor and the gateway to the hills beyond. Two factors distinguish the region. The second is the sheer contrast in housing age: established, often modest post-war and 1960s–70s housing through Bassendean-adjacent Lockridge, Kiara, Beechboro and Midvale, set against the almost entirely new-build estates of Ellenbrook and its neighbours. Bullsbrook, at the far northern edge, remains largely rural and semi-rural, with RAAF Base Pearce a significant local presence.
